THE EVAP EDGE:
EXPERIENCE THE POWER OF THE LATEST SOFTWARE.

Modern vehicles rely on the Evaporative Emission Control (EVAP) system to prevent harmful fuel vapours from escaping into the atmosphere.

Instead of being lost, vapours are captured, stored, and later burned in the engine. Understanding how these systems work – and how to test them – is vital for accurate, efficient diagnostics.

EVAP problems are one of the highest-occurrence issues and remain a leading cause of comebacks. Having thorough coverage and knowing why this matters across the board can take the stress out of EVAP issues.

Discover what’s hot in the latest diagnostic software release and see how we’ve got your back with dedicated EVAP content, giving you the critical repair information you need to diagnose and repair with confidence.

COMMON
EVAP

ISSUES.

  • Blocked vent lines: often caused by dirt or debris restricting airflow.
  • Corroded or contaminated vent valves: commonly affected by road salt, moisture, and grime.
  • Cracked hoses, filler neck corrosion, or poor seals: leading to vapour leaks within the system.
  • Purge valve leaks: the Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Valve is a frequent cause of repeat EVAP issues.

It’s also important to recognise the difference between a leak-related DTC and an electrical fault. Mistaking one for the other can waste valuable diagnostic time and lead to unnecessary repairs.

EVAP
TESTING
METHODS.

Leak Testing: Smoke Machines

The fastest way to locate and measure leaks, making invisible vapour losses visible. The Snap-on® Smart Smoke® EVAP Machine makes testing for leaks much easier.

Trouble codes include:PO440 - EVAP Problem, PO442 - Small Leak, P0455 - Gross leak, PO456 - Very Small Leak, PO457 - Gas Cap

Electrical Testing: Scan Tool Functional Tests

Activate purge and vent valves, monitor sensor responses, and run automated OEM EVAP routines.

Trouble codes include: PO443 - Purge Control, PO446 - Vent Control, PO452 - Pressure Sensor, PO487 - Purge Solenoid

Diagnosing these trouble codes is now easier than ever — explore real-world EVAP challenges below and see how the latest software speeds up repairs.

MAZDA® 6 VENT VALVE
SPIDER BLOCKAGE.

Issue Overview: Mazda® 6 vehicles with the 2.5L engine (14 Sept 2009 – 2 May 2011) were affected when golden orb-weaver spiders could weave webs in the evaporative canister vent line.

Impact: Blocked vent lines can cause excessive negative fuel tank pressure during purging, potentially cracking the tank and leading to a fuel-lean condition with increased fire risk.

Recall: Mazda® issued safety and emissions recall 7214C for this issue.

Snap-on® Advantage: With Fast-Track® Intelligent Diagnostics, see all TSBs, recalls, and OEM campaigns related to the specific vehicle and code you're working on — no hours of searching through hundreds of documents required.
