THE GPF EDGE: EXPERIENCE THE POWER OF THE LATEST SOFTWARE.

Modern vehicles rely on Gasoline Particulate Filters (GPF), also known as Otto Particulate Filters (OPF) or Petrol Particulate Filters (PPF), to reduce fine particulate emissions and meet stringent Euro 6 and China 6 regulations.

GPFs capture soot particles produced during combustion, which are then periodically removed through a process called regeneration. Understanding how GPFs operate – and how to monitor and perform regeneration – is essential for accurate, efficient diagnostics.

While GPF faults are less frequent than some other emission systems, blocked or overloaded filters can impact performance, trigger warning lights, and cause comebacks if misdiagnosed. Having thorough coverage and knowing the regeneration procedures ensures you can address these issues confidently and efficiently.

Discover the latest Snap-on® diagnostic software features and see how we support you with dedicated GPF content, providing the critical repair guidance you need to perform regeneration and resolve particulate filter issues with confidence.

COMMON
GPF ISSUES.

Gasoline Particulate Filters (GPF/OPF/PPF) are designed for durability, but issues can still arise that impact performance and emissions. Common problems include:

  • Soot buildup or incomplete regeneration leading to backpressure and warning lights.
  • Faulty pressure or temperature sensors preventing regeneration or causing false codes.
  • Excessive ash accumulation reducing filter capacity over time.
  • Leaks or contamination from oil, coolant, or additives affecting filtration efficiency.

With the latest Snap-on® diagnostic software and the Fast-Track® Troubleshooter workflow, you can diagnose the root cause based on the exact vehicle and code you are working on, then complete the repair with confidence.

  • The process may take up to 45 minutes to complete.

Completion:

  • On-screen instructions will confirm when regeneration has finished.

BMW® 1-SERIES EB38A1:
PPF (GPF) INITIALISATION.

If regeneration is unsuccessful, inspect the PPF (GPF) with a borescope to check for monolith damage. Replace the filter if required.

When PPF (GPF) replacement is necessary, complete the installation by running the exclusive Snap-on® Functional Test – Petrol Particulate Filter: Initial Operation. This essential step ensures the new filter is correctly programmed, and with the latest software release, it is quick and straightforward to perform.
