Top Tips for Choosing the Right MOT Equipment

Investing in new MOT equipment is undoubtably and big decision for an independent garage owner. With many suppliers and configurations available, it can be challenging to select the system that best meets your needs. This article will guide you through the key considerations to ensure you make an informed choice.

In this article:

Survey your workspace: Start by evaluating your workshop’s current setup and future expansion plans. The layout and space available will greatly influence your decision. For instance, if your workshop can only accommodate a pit installation or has a recess bay, you'll probably want a solution that minimises the need for extensive groundwork and reduces downtime.

Consider whether you'll have one or two MOT testers operating the bay. A One-Person Test Lane (OPTL) or Automated Test Lane (ATL) might be suitable, depending on your staffing and space. Additionally, think about whether you can benefit from a dual revenue setup if space permits.

A dual revenue system allows you to combine MOT testing with wheel alignment to utilise the same space for different services, creating a new revenue source to your business.

If you choose to partner with Snap-on® we'll do this for you and conduct a site survey and advise you on all of the options you have to meet DVSA requirements.

Transform your workshop

Option 1: Automated Test Lane

An ATL is a comprehensive testing solution that includes a 4-post vehicle lift, emissions analyser, headlight beam tester, jacking beam, and wheel play detectors. SUN® ATL systems can also include rear slip plates, allowing the bay to be used for wheel alignment work.

ATL’s offer many advantages over a standard MOT bay and have many productivity and efficiency benefits.

The key advantage of an ATL is its efficiency. It requires only one technician to perform the MOT test, freeing up another technician to handle other tasks. This can significantly increase your workshop's productivity. Modern ATLs come with connectivity software that communicates quickly with the DVSA MTS System, speeding up the testing process and reducing manual errors.

Option 2: One-Person Test Lane (OPLT) Scissor Lift

Some garages may be restricted by the physical dimensions of their workshop, others by planning restrictions preventing or making it difficult to upgrade to a 4-post automated testing lane.

An OPTL, such as the SUN® SSL-6350, is ideal for these circumstances. It can be installed in an existing recess without additional groundwork* in as little as one day, minimising test lane downtime.

An OPTL allows a single technician to conduct the MOT test, this not only frees up valuable manpower but also streamlines your operations, allowing you to serve more customers in less time.

A typical OPTL package includes a vehicle scissor lift, connected emissions analyser, headlight beam tester, jacking beam, and roller brake tester. This setup maximises capability within a smaller footprint, making it suitable for both new and existing workshops.

Option 3: Pit Lane

For workshops with a pre-existing MOT pit, upgrading to a Pit Package can be a cost-effective solution. This option eliminates the need for a vehicle lift and requires minimal groundwork.

To comply with DVSA regulations, any Vehicle Testing Station (VTS) that is newly opening, has changed ownership, recommenced MOT testing after inactivity, or is replacing emissions testing equipment, must upgrade to connected status. Garages must comply with this requirement to stay in line with regulatory standards and maintain authorisation for MOT testing. A SUN® Pit Package includes the latest connected roller brake tester and DGA6000 LINK Emissions Analyser, which integrate seamlessly with the DVSA MTS to streamline testing and reduce errors and save time from start to finish.

As time is money, the cumulative time and cost savings on each MOT test will bring you excellent gains in the long run.

Types of vehicles: Consider the types of vehicles you will be testing. For commercial vehicles weighing between 3,000kg and 3,500kg, a Class VII configuration is necessary. This ensures the equipment meets DVSA specifications. For motorcycle testing, decide whether you need a standalone system or optional accessories to enable Class I or II testing on Class IV or VII brake testers.

Longevity: Your MOT Equipment is an investment that you’ll have at centerstage in your workshop for a considerable amount of time and you’ll want something you can reply on day-in, day-out for years to come.

The last thing you're going to want is to invest in brand new equipment and experience failures or recurring breakdowns a year or two into your ownership.

MOT Testing is the lifeline of many independent garages and downtime due to equipment issues is really going to impact on your bottom line in the long run.

You’re going to want to choose a system you can reply on and have complete piece of mind it’s going to perform for you when you need it and when the unexpected does occur, that you can be back up and running quickly so you can always keep your doors open!
